Q

Martha Washington research inquiry

Good morning,

My name is Kim Curtis, and I’m a research editor for the Washington Papers at the University of Virginia. We are starting a new Martha Washington project, and I am in the process of collecting correspondence and other documents related to Martha Washington.

I realize it’s a long shot, but could you let me know if you have Martha Washington papers in your collections that can be digitized and emailed to us, or if we would need to visit your archive in person? We have found Martha Washington and Washington Family documents in some rather surprising places! Your institution would be cited online and in the final published edition.

Also, if you are aware of Washington family documents that might exist in your archive but would not be found online yet, I would appreciate any help you could provide in accessing them.

We are also on the lookout specifically for Martha and Washington Family letters to and from certain women in Martha’s circle, such as Fanny Bassett Lear, Mercy Otis Warren, and Elizabeth Willing Powel.

Although we have already checked ArchiveGrid, we are now contacting as many archives as possible in the U.S. and the U.K. in order to be as thorough as possible.

Thank you for your help.

Answer

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding correspondence and documents related to Martha Washington. What an interesting project! I wish I could tell you we had papers that could go into your project, but unfortunately, we do not have anything in Special Collections & Archives related directly to Martha Washington, or any of the other women listed.

Again, thank you for your inquiry and I wish we did have things to include in your project!
